PGS Chiang Mai Organic Agricultural Cooperative Limited Group
Status: Under Development
Description
Groups of farmers in Chiang Mai and Lampoon provinces found “Chiang Mai Organic Agricultural Cooperative Limited” from lessons learnt of adverse sides of modern farming or monoculture system that aimed to maximize farm products for export. Such system has to rely on production factors from outside farms and communities such as chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides, chemical fungicide and chemical herbicide. The chemical products are built from modern technologies that caused high production cost for farmers. Farmers had faced poverty, increasing debt, health and physical problem from hard-working, chemical side effects, polluted environment, and poison-contaminated foods. Consequently, some of members have initially changed to organic agricultural system since 1993 and found Chiang Mai Organic Agricultural Producers Club which has been later developed to Chiang Mai Organic Agricultural Cooperative Limited on 6 November 2003. The cooperative aims to solve members’ market problem, promote well-being, stable and sustainable income. At present, there are over 300 members from five districts in Chiang Mai comprising of Phrao district, Mae-Tang district, Doi-Saket district, San-Kumphang district, and Sa-moeng district.
