| Description | Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) www.biovisionafricatrust.org is a not-for-profit organisation established in Kenya in 2009 by the Biovision Foundation for ecological development of Switzerland. The Trust’s goal is to alleviate poverty, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Kenya, and other African countries through supporting the dissemination of information and knowledge on appropriate technologies and practices in sustainable agriculture to improve human, animal, plant, and environmental health. To achieve this, BvAT works with various partners including governments, international partners, public institutions, civil society and farmers.
Currently, BvAT supports three main programmes, the Biovision Farmer Communication Programme (FCP) and the Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) Initiative and The Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture.
The Farmer Communication Programme (FCP) is supported by Biovision Foundation and its goal is to enhance economic, social and environmental livelihoods of smallholder farmers in East Africa through increased adoption of ecologically sustainable agriculture (ESA). This is done by supporting dissemination of information and knowledge on appropriate sustainable agricultural technologies through 4 integrated channels namely, a digital Knowledge Database called Infonet-Biovision, two monthly publications known as The Organic Farmer (TOF) magazine in Kenya and Mkulima Mbunifu (MkM) in Tanzania, a weekly broadcast of The Organic Farmer Radio (TOF Radio) programme and a field extension project known as Farmer Communication Outreach.
The Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) Initiative has the goal of contributing to mainstreaming of ecological organic agriculture into national agricultural production systems by 2025 in order to improve agricultural productivity, food security, access to markets and sustainable development in Africa. Currently, it is implemented in 9 countries, co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) (with support from SIDA) and parallel funding from the African Union (AU).
The Knowledge Hub for Organic Agriculture in Eastern Africa (KHEA) is part of the Global Project Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture in Africa (KCOA), implemented by GIZ with funding support from BMZ Special Initiative One-World-No-Hunger. The overall goal of the Eastern Africa Knowledge Hub is to ensure that ecological organic Agriculture is integrated into the Eastern Africa agricultural systems in 4 countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. |
